Personality & Traits

General Overview An independent man. Likes to do mostly everything himself. Had to for most of his life, as some depended on him to survive. His time with the freighter crew helped chill him out to a great degree that now his life is keeping an equilibrium between drummed-in instincts he grew up with maintaining that chillax mindset as he keeps moving forward with his goals.
Strengths & Weaknesses He will help those less fortunate than himself as he had lived that life, he doesn't wish it on anyone, sometimes giving too much leaving himself vulnerable. However, if the situation called for it he is capable of taking care of himself thanks to years of Tal Shiar sponsored conditioning.

He was taught by his parents and friendly handlers the art of being unnoticed, forgettable and unseen for it was possible the Tal Shiar were looking for them all.

Learning quickly is something he had to master, though he is not immune to failure. The conditioning has trained his brain to process information just a little faster.

He generally wants to take people at their word but his training has taught him better, so it was easier to see when he was taken advantage of when it happened. This limited trust or unwillingness to give has driven away genuine people as well and he had regrets there but alas he doesn't dwell on the immediate past often.

However, that has improved later in his life thanks to living with a freighter crew. Painstakingly he has learned to overcome his Tal Shiar mistrustful analysis instincts under their tutelage at first contact with someone new yet he is still able to keep his guard up.
Ambitions He wants to avenge his parents ever since learning they were killed by the Tal Shiar, especially as they were on their way to join him when it happened. That is first and foremost a driving force behind his passion for moving forward.

The last time he spoke with his parents they made him promise that he would live a full life filled with adventure and peace. So he is working on fulfilling that promise and found that he had been able to explore this after he escaped his second home.

Late in life he found he wanted to better his knowledge and experience as much as he could. It all started when his new family on the freighter had delivered him to Earth, with their support and that of a Starfleet Intelligence operative he was permitted to attend various technical and scientific institutions like Daystrom.

That launched him into his mission in life of bettering himself.
Hobbies & Interests Before turning 22 there wasn't time for pastimes and desires as survival was his main focus but after 22, however, he developed a liking to board games, chess mostly but he played many games during his time on the freighter.

After joining the freighter crew is when he was introduced to the pleasures of hobbies and activities. It did take some time for him to see the point of doing things for fun but they showed him the way.

He grew to enjoy it all and now wants to experience just about everything at least once. At one point during a delivery mission the freighter visited a pleasure planet and he got to put his swimming lessons to practice for real, amongst other… things.

Personal History Amarok had the somewhat misfortune of being born to two Tal Shiar operatives who had stupidly fallen in love both off and on the job. Luckily his birth and subsequent 10 years of childhood was on Romulus had been hidden from the world. His parents knew that their superiors would use him against them if the Tal Shiar got their hands on Amarok.

Soon it wasn't just Amarok as the years went on many other children joined him. Other stupid operatives had children as well and so his life brightened as he made friends with the other children of various ages. Though the children had some free time, the rest were their handlers teaching them all the basics and very harsh discipline followed any who failed or performed incorrectly. The Tal Shiar could burst in at any moment so they had to learn quickly and the safehouse was always full of tension, stress and fear. Amarok developed a natural talent for gadgetry and technology, though interest in the various sciences had peaked through often.

It all came to a crashing halt when Amarok turned 10, for the Tal Shiar found their safehouse and in the chaos majority of the visiting parents lost their lives as they helped the handlers fight to get to the escape shuttles, Amarok saw his parents be killed just as the handlers dragged him, as the last of the children into the shuttles a moment before launch.

He cried the whole way to the new safehouse like many of the children did, they all now understood the danger and why all the training and education was so harsh. It all was to prepare them for when they were discovered, and beyond of course. Their new home became Nimbus 3 in Paradise City, where the Federation, Romulans and Klingons attempted to create a colony together. It failed utterly and so the Orion syndicate, along with other criminal organisations moved in and now ruled those left behind.

Amarok, amongst the eldest of the children, helped the handlers get the younger children settled into their new safehouse. He and the other older children, along with most of the handlers, went out to find work. 6 long years later and they all had found purpose and learned how to survive there. Amarok became fluent in several languages there and helped teach the younger children enough Klingon, Andorian, Vulcan, Orion and Human English as those were mostly those species living and working on Nimbus 3 congregating in Paradise City.

Amarok had been putting his technical knowledge to the test in a tech repair business and a few freelance jobs on the side. He even had several times been a local bar technician and just fixed things enough that he'd continue to get work there. He even landed an apprenticeship with the city's tech guild who mentored him while on the job. Occasionally reading about the various scientific literature he could find along the way.

Being 16 at this stage Amarok began to notice his attraction to his own gender and fooled around a bit with other inclined guys, both older and younger than him. Really only because of hormones running rampant. That being the least of his worries as it wasn't the only thing messing with his mind, the Syndicate both professionally and personally, manipulated him by the fact he needed the money. Yet everyone needed it to survive in Paradise City and only so much entered the city's economy. He failed to see any other ways so his only choice was to play along until he could save enough or engineer a plot to lull the Syndicate into believing passage off world for his friends, and himself last of course, benefitted them. A few months after turning 19 he met an older man by the name of Rafe Jaesan, the two connected well and together they managed to score some small victories against the Syndicate in various ways.

After 2 years, the pair had developed a relationship that gave Amarok so much joy in life, as much as two people could find on a forsaken world run by crime lords. The two had managed to get all his friends and their handlers out of Syndicate control and offworld in a variety of directions. Someday he hoped to reconnect with them once he'd left with Rafe. On the eve of their final scheme targeting Syndicate headquarters, Amarok discovered Rafe reporting to Starfleet Intelligence. Was their relationship a lie? Was Rafe using him? Those questions had him running but Rafe heard him and ran after him.

The two managed to work it out after some hours of talking which had their operation to start moments after. Amarok now knew what it was like for his parents, those moments they shared when they thought he was watching them. He had those with Rafe and while it did hurt Amarok that Rafe didn't trust him enough to share that the older man was a Starfleet spy, being taught by spies himself it was easy to see why. Thankfully their shared goals of ruining the Syndicate, other gangs and finding small ways of helping those in need, gave them common ground and so Amarok promised himself he’d seriously forgive the spy once the job was done.

A virus seemed like the best option as it could be sent to multiple computerized Syndicate assets and cause so much trouble but it had to be planted in their primary network and so the duo had infiltrated the local nightclub which the Syndicate used as headquarters in Paradise City. They succeeded in the virus' deployment but as they were on their way out Amarok got caught and snatched out of Rafe' hands as he was transported away.

For the next year Amarok suffered much torture before being forced to work for the Syndicate, but he soon learned that the Syndicate never discovered the virus, they didn't even know why Amarok and Rafe was there. He used his anger and that feeling of being left behind even though he knew it wasn’t Rafe’s fault to fuel his resistance to whatever they tried to get him to talk. He almost gave in once or twice but he thanked his parents and handlers for the training that continues to save his life.

In the last few days of the year a former Romulan Mining Freighter by the unusual name of Unstable Unicorn arrived to drop off passengers and cargo. Amarok had been charged with taking the cargo off the freighter, though once completed he managed to put himself into a largish crate that was marked for the freighter. He triggered the virus as he felt the crate he was inside of being lifted and moved aboard the Unstable Unicorn. He had a rebreather unit on as he was often worked to the point of heavy breathing and sometimes not able to get enough air, it all seemed destined to happen as he felt the crate be placed. Though not secured which he found odd but didn't think on it further for remaining hidden was top priority and so the freighter left Nimbus 3 moments later.

He pictured the virus as it began its programmed assault as it would slowly re-wrote the Syndicate's computers for months. A few days went by as Amarok secretly stole food and crawled through the freighter to find a better hiding spot. He'd found one but on his way back from a food trip he was discovered and brought before the freighter's captain, a Spirokris Solomon, Joined Trill male. Amarok pleaded for them to take him to Earth, after much discussion and questioning the captain agreed provided he earned it by working.

The Dominion War during 2373 to 2375 saw the Unstable Unicorn's crew as they joined the relief efforts to worlds affected by the war, and some odd jobs here and there. During the time he spent on the Unstable Unicorn, Amarok became the romantic focus of the Captain. Spirokris had noticed the man Amarok had become, 27 years old, and was now interested. Amarok couldn't believe it, though he himself had feelings for Rafe but he couldn't deny that because how Spirokris had taken him in and helped him did produce feelings for the Trill, who happened to be unjoined. The War didn’t help as the fear of losing either of the men he’d grown to love was great that he embraced all the time he had with both.

It was all confusing and hard to deal with, he didn’t know he could love both older men. It was in different ways of course, as soon as those ways crossed over Amarok knew he'd be in trouble, not to mention would they accept each other in sharing him. Amarok feared all the situations he could think up. A few days before they were due to arrive back at Earth unbeknownst to the Romulan, Amarok accepted a dinner date with Spirokris. It was all very exciting and scary at the same time as he'd only been romantic with Rafe, a swirling storm of emotions and dealing with them as well as the war.

In the last month of the war, a rescue mission that the Unstable Unicorn was conducting became a battlefield. Luckily the USS Moore had come at the distress call that the freighter crew answered, and a Prometheus class as well. Quickly the 2 were discovered by Jem’Hadar ships and while the Moore fought, Amarok and his family searched the damaged ship for survivors. At the moment that the Unstable Unicorn signaled they had finished and was moving to jump, the last of the Jem’Hadar assaulted the Moore’s bridge before being destroyed.

A few days of collaboration saw both ships repaired and some bonds between the crews made. Soon Amarok would come to see that if he’d not met Commander Stryvek, his future would be what will be. Like all young people filed it all away in memories for they had to move forward and the 2 ships parted ways.

Though during the journey the freighter crew never had the opportunity to go to Earth as they picked up job after job, soon he began to enjoy whatever daily tasks and education the crew gave him. Before he knew it Amarok was 29 and a month away from his birthday. He'd traveled much of the Alpha and Beta quadrant's known space with the occasional tangents off into unknown space for whatever reason in that time. They were even contracted by the new United Relief Council for continued post war missions as they came up. Amarok enjoyed being a technician but the more he saw of the Galaxy, scientific investigation and experimentation became more of his thing and earned enough to live comfortably somewhere.

A few days before his birthday the Unstable Unicorn arrived at Earth, somehow without his knowledge, and the crew surprised him with their arrival. Much shoreleave was had by all but 2 days prior to their departure Amarok ran into Rafe and while Amarok had long ago forgiven Rafe for what felt like leaving him behind he wouldn't have met his new friends and got to do so much without being left behind. It seemed that the other man hadn't managed to move on, well emotionally anyway, because he immediately pleaded forgiveness. He did try to get Amarok out several times but the Syndicate had secured many of their assets physically as it seemed their virus had caused lots of problems, not all at once however. Just enough to be a nagging nuisance.

Amarok and Rafe spent the rest of those 2 days together and talked most of the time. When Rafe mentioned that he could sponsor Amarok into various institutions and study programs. He mentioned a few projects that he could expose the Romulan to in hopes to get the Romulan to stay on Earth, Amarok was intrigued and so they went to explore them. Upon returning to the Unstable Unicorn, Spirokris informed Amarok that his debt was paid and he was granted freedom. Of course Spirokris encouraged Amarok to stay onboard if he wanted to. Amarok did but decided to remain on Earth, so after a farewell party and tearfilled goodbye the crew returned to their freighter and Rafe led Amarok to his place and they lived together for a year.
Service Record He gained an apprenticeship at Daystrom Institute, Training division. It went on for 8 years, all the while assisting in projects run by the Institute, kind of like on the job training.

Amarok did courses in astro sciences, hydroponics, planetary sciences, stellar cartography and xeno sciences. He did experience much hardship from the various students and some of the instructors, mainly because he is Romulan.

Sure there is enough bad blood between the Federation and Romulan Star Empire but Amarok wasn't even there for any of it.

At one point he had been pulled into a fight and he decided to simply take it, there was no point in a reaction. He didn't think they'd see reason, instead he just threw himself into living life and exploring the scientific realm as he truly saw wonder in it since coming from a sheltered childhood, and harsh adolescence.

It was still hard to fight his conditioning at the strong sounds, or perceived threats that sometimes could be associated with social interaction whenever he met new people, which wasn't often and awkward, but with both Rafe and the Unstable Unicorn’s crew continually sharing their knowledge, wisdom and experiences with him.

It helped him through those times and he was grateful for them more than they’d ever know. He’d even told them a few times.

By 2387 Amarok completed most of his courses, some assignments and assessments were granted extensions, and he was actively involved with a variety of small projects and long term experiments.

One of those was the study of supernovas and it came to their attention from long range scans of the Romulan Star Empire that it had been brought to the Continuing Committee that the Glintara stars were in decline.

Federation scientists were eager to observe the process and Amarok joined their team when one of them was left for another study that started.

It seemed that Scientific Investigation had once again become the Federation's focus as the relief efforts of the various powers lost urgency.
