Lieutenant JG T'Mara

Name T'Mara

Position Chief Medical Officer

Rank Lieutenant JG

Character Information

Gender Female
Species Vulcan / Romulan
Age 39 (just a big kid really)

Physical Appearance

Height 5'11"
Weight 160 lbs
Hair Color Black
Eye Color Hazel
Physical Description T’Mara is of slightly above average height for a Vulcan female. She does not have a lithe, willowy body (which is considered aesthetically pleasing by Vulcan standards), but rather one that skews visibly athletic and defined having been honed by frequent physical activity.

She would not be considered a great beauty either (again by Vulcan standards.) Her brows are too pronounced, too upswept and it marks her as different or other. As she has physically matured, a subtle creasing showed up between her brows, making her looked slightly perturbed or vexxed to non-Vulcans.

Her eyes are also quite unusual. They aren’t the dark, fathomless pools that the writers of old wrote many a poem on when describing a paragon of feminine ideals. Rather they are a rich whiskey tone and carry flecks of gold and green, quite a rarity in Vulcan genetics.

T’Mara’s skin tone skews towards a light olive complexion, with a subtle green undertone, and her inky black hair is cut and styled in a short pixie, with side-swept bangs which is brushed to cover her forehead, and longer wispy fringe along her ears and back of her neck. Her hands are long, with narrow, dexterous fingers tipped with almond shaped, medium length nails – painted a slightly greenish-nude color to blend with her skin.

Personality & Traits

General Overview T’Mara is quite driven. As Starfleet was her only chance for a life that held any form of satisfaction, she has immersed herself in it to the best of her ability. Outwardly, at least at first, T’Mara comes across as a quintessentially controlled Vulcan. Her training on Mount Seleya drilled in the concept of being like stilled water and she took those lessons quite seriously. Outwardly she appears calm and serene, but the underneath that demeanor of serenity lies an essential self that is far less stoic. T’Mara taught herself early on how to build an impenetrable wall within, a safe place where none of the stinged barbs of rejection and repudiation could reach. It is this ‘mask’ that she wears to protect herself and to appear—to most—fully Vulcan. She doesn’t wallow in the injustices in life; it is not logical to dwell on that which cannot be changed. ‘Kaiidth,’ – What is, is.
Strengths & Weaknesses Dispassionate / Logical
Self-Assured – can be perceived as arrogant/haughty (Like a Vulcan)
Has no issue speaking her mind (especially within the realms of her specialty)
Can seem aloof
Struggles with her innate duality
A potential powder keg full of anger/despair at what was done to her once the truth of her mother was revealed
Perhaps a deep-down personal resentment towards Vulcan

--

T’Mara’s strengths are varied. She is calm under stress – which is quite a strength given her profession and has the confidence (perhaps arrogance) that all successful surgeons possess that they can fix anything/beat the odds.

She has no issue following chain of command. Her life on Vulcan had been spent knowing others held great power over her, and she subsumed much of her ‘self’ in order to be seen as remotely acceptable. The hierarchy within Starfleet is somewhat familiar as it is comforting. One immediately knows their place.

Once she had been sequestered at the temple on Mount Seleya, her education focused on the healing arts. The priestess in charge of her care also required her to learn Rihannsu and to immerse herself in everything that was known of Romulan culture. T’Mara did not desire this information, but complied understanding the precarious position she was in. This part of her education was a double-edged blade. It evoked a yearning for understanding of this mysterious, illicit part of herself. She had never met a Romulan before…what would she do if the opportunity presented itself?

Although she is the progeny of diplomats, T’Mara does not have a silver-tongue. She can come across as unsubtle or bossy when she has an idea and believes it to be the best course of action. Some can construe this as being arrogant or haughty, but T’Mara usually has a good reason for ‘arguing’ a point. Really good VULCAN reasons that no doubt translate quite poorly to off-worlders.
Ambitions Starfleet is her world, her life. Ultimately, T’Mara would like to find a community (family) for herself. Her life is currently filled with duty – which is a cornerstone of Vulcan society – but without a foundation of belonging.
Outside of that, she has professionally dedicated herself to Starfleet and all that it entails. Her ambition to be the best at what she does and spends much of her ‘free time’ learning the most up-to-date evidence-based practice guidelines and employing the best practices in the care of her patients.
Hobbies & Interests T’Mara finds physical activity to be personally gratifying. When not on duty, or meditating as required, she is often found in the gym. While at the academy she began long distance running and taking forms of martial arts, and these activities are still continued.

She is also an avid reader. It is a necessary requirement to keep up on the latest medical findings, so T’Mara’s often seen with her head down reading a padd, especially at mealtimes. (Although sometimes it’s not medical research…she might have a secret ‘passion’ for Earth romances.)

T’Mara also is—perhaps against better judgement—fascinated with alien culture. If given an opportunity to try new things, be it food/drink/activities, she will attempt it unless it goes against any deeply ingrained cultural taboos.

Will occasionally partake in a bite of chocolate – only generally when alone and off-duty. She is still quite young, and without the grounding force of familial bonds, she’s trying to figure things out alone. The feeling of ‘freedom,’ she experiences with small amounts of intoxicants is…alluring. For a moment in time, she can feel without censure.

Personal History T’Mara’s parents in 2339 were both Counselors who served under Ambassador Sarek in the Vulcan diplomatic corps. They were away on a diplomatic mission when then Counselor Ivek fell ‘ill.’ There was only one suitable candidate within the delegation who could ‘assist’ him through this brief illness. Counselor Senva and Counselor Ivek were both placed on medical leave during the mission until both were declared fit to return to duty.

A few months later it had become clear that Senva had conceived, and the two diplomatic officers returned to Vulcan where Senva gave birth to their daughter in 2248. The decision was made between Senva and Ivek (and his mate, L’Saya – who was grateful for Senva’s sacrifice), that their daughter, named T’Mara, would be raised with Ivek and L’Saya.

Senva left Vulcan after T’Mara’s birth to return to her duties with Ambassador Sarek, whereas Ivek remained on Vulcan as the thought of parting from L’Saya, now saddled with a newborn infant, was disagreeable to him. His request for transfer was granted and the new ‘family’ took up residence in Shi’Kahr while he continued his diplomatic duties at home.

Senva and Ivek would never see each other again, but the two would communicate often over the status of their daughter…until 2367 when Senva was reported KIA during a transporter accident near the Neutral Zone while on a diplomatic mission to meet with envoys of the Romulan Star Empire. However, it was quickly revealed that Senva was an undercover Romulan operative, and that was when T’Mara’s life completely changed.

T'Mara, who was 19 at the time, was calmly sat down by her parents, Ivek and L’Saya and informed of the truth. It changed everything. Her entire worldview had been destroyed. She had known that L’Saya wasn’t her birth mother, but she was a mother in all ways that were important to a child. To hear that her birth mother was an enemy to the Federation…a Romulan spy? The news caused significant emotional compromise in the young girl. Her parents, once supportive and proud of how she was progressing now stood cold and distant as if she were suddenly and undetonated bomb. Her turmoil went unrecognized, but her ‘mother’s’ comment solidified her status as different. “She has always been too emotional. Now we know why. She cannot help her nature. She is nothing but a half-breed.”

The safety and acceptance of her family unit had been shattered. T’Mara had been so shocked by L’Saya’s words that any expression she was inadvertently displaying fell right off her face. She stood and calmly asked to be allowed to retreat to ‘meditate.’ Her dismissal was granted without hesitation. L’Saya would never speak to her again.

It wasn’t long before others found out. News of a highly respected Vulcan Ambassador being an undercover Romulan operative was something the video feeds latched onto like a Tiberian bat. The family of male she had been betrothed to at Age 7 demanded that the arrangement be immediately annulled, and T’Mara was to be sent away to Mount Seleya for the bond to be dissolved.

She was young, but she understood the concept of banishment. The sins of the mother, as it were, was quite far-reaching. For her father’s family (and clan) to save face, T’Mara was removed from her home, lost her place within the family, and her very existence within the clan was scrubbed clean.

T’Mara was sent to Seleya alone. Her father said goodbye to her with the all the sentimentality of a stranger. Her mother Senva had fooled everyone, and T’Mara was nothing but collateral damage. It was not logical for her to pay the price for her mother’s acts…but it was the Vulcan way.

Declared kre'nath (illegitimate child, literally ‘shamed one’), T’Mara was whisked away to Mount Seleya where her betrothal was dissolved, and she was then informed that she would begin her training as an unbonded healer. It was not a role she would have willingly chosen. To be a priestess of Seleya was to serve, in all things, and T’Mara was a dutiful child.

Perhaps it was her tainted nature, but T’Mara had been anticipating the life moments of growing up and taking her place in Vulcan society…of attending the Science Academy, becoming a productive member of society…of becoming a wife and mother. All those dreams had been dashed amongst the rocks.

Having no other option, T’Mara poured herself into her training--as it was the only option available to her now. She excelled in her studies, but her mixed heritage was a disadvantage, as T’Mara’s telepathic skills were simply not strong enough to deal with the intricacies of a sick or unbalanced Vulcan mind.

Unable to complete her training to become a Priestess, and unable to obtain a coveted slot to the Vulcan Science Academy due to her lack of clan and status, T’Mara knew her options had all but dwindled to nothing. She postulated that a satisfying life would not be possible on Vulcan, so seeing no other course of action, she applied to Starfleet Academy as a last-ditch effort for some sense of self-determination. Somehow even with her ‘tainted’ background, she was accepted. Little did she know that someone unknown had spoken for her and eased Starfleet’s concerns regarding her questionable heritage.

Earth was an alien, inexplicable place filled with garish colors, sounds, and smells. The weather of San Francisco weather was hellish to a desert born being, and T’Mara quickly found herself perpetually chilled. T’Mara attempted to forge associations with the Vulcan cadets, but once they found out her identity, she was effectively shunned. They looked at her and saw a potential enemy. Meanwhile other cadets she interacted with saw her and saw a stuffy, arrogant, know-it-all Vulcan.

Had she not spent years at Seleya, the sense of social isolation might have proved too much. Instead, T’Mara focused on her studies, knowing that her circumstances could not be changed and it was logical to accept what was and ‘make the best of it.’ T’Mara poured her energies into her studies and found an unexpected outlet for her illogical emotional states. Upon seeing a virtual ‘flyer’, she tried out for something called ‘cross country,’ which was not a travel club at all, but T’Mara discovered she was very good at running. She also discovered that there were martial arts classes that could be taken for physical education credits and subsequently used her time on Earth to become quite proficient in a number of forms.

As the academy years progressed, T’Mara did make some associations with other cadets. They thought she was wholly Vulcan, and naturally nothing was done to disabuse them of that notion. She spent some unscheduled time observing those around her have interesting encounters in their own lives and found the interpersonal relationships of others to be quite fascinating. Life at the academy allowed for numerous opportunities of people watching, and T’Mara used her observations to help better understand how other species interacted.

Graduation came, and many of her associates received their commissions and orders and moved on to the next steps in their lives. She remained behind, as she had the Medical Academy and a residency and fellowship still to complete.

This part of T’Mara’s education was much easier, or rather, by this point she had made peace with the trajectory of her life and the environment had become familiar. It was filled with numerous challenges, but they were of a collegiate variety, and in this arena, T’Mara excelled.
She graduated top in her cohort and was matched to Starfleet Medical, the most prestigious residency posting within the Federation. She was selected to do an acute care surgical residency, which would potentially send her towards the frontier where the skills of a competent surgeon were highly sought after.

T’Mara learned how to doctor during the six-year residency where she went from cautious observer to first assist in many of the OR cases within the hospital. All of this was to learn how to be a surgeon, and when she was in the OR, all but completely faceless, that T’Mara felt the most genuine. Her precision earned her a reputation amongst the attendings and when it was time for Fellowship selection, it had been a foregone conclusion that she would continue at Starfleet Medical and learned under the highly skilled hand of the Acute Care Surgery attending physician, Commander Klaus Becker.

His intense style of training really forced T’Mara to the limit of her abilities and training, and she was eagerly molded into quite the proficient surgeon. Her confidence in the OR was unwavering, and there her passion was quite evident. He personally vouched for her with command and secured her a rather unprecedented position for such a ‘young’ surgeon. Now it will be all up to her.
