General Overview Dashku is very individualistic and being in Starfleet can be a challenge for her, with so many being in the same uniforms and following orders. The benefits out weigh this, because of how strongly she desires to be always on the move and see new places. She tends to explore the world around her with her five senses, and her natural curiosity caused her to break down and tear apart everything she could get her hands on as well as learn how to put it all together again. Starfleet was a perfect choice for her to learn and grow as an engineer. She loves to get her hands dirty.

Personal History ::Childhood::
Born on the verdant planet of Taladon XII in Orion space, Dashku's journey into the cosmos was fueled by an insatiable curiosity, a rough teenagehood and a desire to defy the stereotypes that often shrouded her species.

Taladon was a lovely world, what humans would likely consider a Garden of Eden. The plant itself was just about 50% water to 50% landmass, with one major ocean and a lot of smaller seas scattered about the surface. Dashku was born in one of the larger port cities by the name of Wihyrst to a fishmonger father and a lower level enforcer in the Orion syndicate mother. While her mother provided for her needs, the woman was far from a loving and caring mother.

Sayssus wasn’t an evil woman, at least not by Orion standards, but she was a cold mother who believed that discipline and hard work where the keys to succuss. Even from a young age it meant Dashku was on a strict schedule, always accompanied by people that worked for her mother, and always had something going on. She was either studying, in some kind of sport, learning about her mother’s business or combat training. It was Sayssus’ goal to make her daughter a better version of her so that Dashku could surpass her level in the Syndicate. For Dashku it often felt like torture, being in such a ridged adolescents but there was one bright spot through all of it.

Growing up on the Ocean was one of the few pleasant memories of Dashku’s childhood, as strict and as unloving as her mother could be her father was the opposite and it was one of the activities she was allowed that she truly loved. She never could quite figure out why her mother allowed it, from her understanding of their relationship it had been very brief and there was little love between them. She always assumed that perhaps her mother’s heart wasn’t quite as cold as she believed.

Her father was a fishmonger, and often spent time on a boat in his trade. It gave her opportunity to explore a different side of life and it was an area where she excelled. Everything she learned about fishing boats was because of her father. She was a natural on the water and worked hard on her father’s boat. There was always something new and different to try and she absolutely loved it. By the time she’d become a teenager, anything that broke while she was on board fell under her purview. She had ripped apart and put back together nearly every system on her father’s old boat and was nearly more of an expert than he was.

It was on her sixteenth birthday that she finally had an epiphany. Something her father said that spurred the desire to leave the planet, but what perhaps what ultimately drove her to leave was the fact that she was a teenager and it was natural for her to rebel. Maybe the fact that she always hated the regimented schedule her mother insisted upon but wanted the freedom or a combination of the two. All she knew was that she wanted freedom from the life her mother was pushing on her. In the end it drove her to leave Taladon XII on her own for the first time in her life.

A major port like Wihyrst had ocean traffic as well as space port traffic, there where multiple challenges in trying to run like she wanted. She would need a bag with things she could use to survive, to escape her protectors, sneak into the port and onto a ship all without being caught. She’d slipped her protection before, they weren’t the smartest and she had no qualms with them getting killed if she escaped, having a bag wasn’t outside of the norm depending on what was on the schedule for the day but sneaking into the port and onto a ship would be a challenge.

The day she chose to make her escape was a day where she had multiple things on the schedule, which meant a back pack and a sports duffle. She also had a moment in the schedule where she entered the private martial arts academy she attended without the security goons. It was easy enough to sneak out of, mostly because she’d done it before, but there was a back door that was used for deliveries.

Once she was out, it was a matter of keeping her head and face covered and walking to the space port. That was where the real challenge began. She had very little in the way of money, the goons usually paid for everything, so she couldn’t just buy a ticket and she had to figure out a way in. Improvisation was a place where she thrived. After about an hour of walking around the outside, she spotted an employee door. She was charming enough to talk the guard into letting her bring her father the bag he’d left behind at home, even if it had been a complete fabrication.

Once inside, she made her way through the employee locker rooms and swiped a tablet from someone who’d hit the showers so she could get her bearings and make her escape. The place was a labyrinth and it took her the better part of three hours to find the commercial docking ports, which put a sense of urgency into her step. By now the goons would have figured out she’d ditched them and be looking for her. Who knows where they’d think to look for her?

The next challenge was the ship, she picked an older one that looked like it was decently maintained but didn’t have the most robust security. Sneaking in was as simple as getting up the loading ramp with no one seeing her. A task she was sure she completed without anyone noticing. She found a place to lay low until the ship took off and finally breathed a sigh of relief.

The ship’s security, however, was onto her from the word go. They let her board, made sure she didn’t do anything nefarious, and waited until they were off planet before they escorted her to see the captain. Captain Reid Malik was an older man, retired from Starfleet himself and running a civilian ship. The young girl that had snuck aboard his ship was a mystery. As he and his security questioned her it became clear that she was trying to escape the life of a criminal. Reid took a liking to the young orion girl, and decided to help her trying and escape that life. In a twist of fate she never would have seen coming, the Captain chose to take her under his wing and teach her a different life. The man saw her as a daughter who just needed a hand up.

It was a rocky start, a starship and a fishing trawler where similar but a Starship was for more advanced. While things where far less regimented, she spent two years in space learning and doing more that she’d ever imagined but she knew she was reaching the limit of what they could teach her and she wanted more. Starfleet was the natural choice, it had the best engineering and Starship management programs and after working with Reid for two years, she felt like she understood what she’d be getting into with Starfleet. When she decided to enter Starfleet Academy, Captain Malik was happy to write her a recommendation, even if he was sad to lose such a good member of his crew.

::Starfleet Academy::
Dashku was an incredibly determined student, she wanted to prove that she deserved to be in Starfleet. That she had the natural talent, intelligence and grit to make it as a member of the exploration organization. The academy was certainly a challenge academically, she was stretched but that would not be her biggest challenge.

Orions, specifically Orion women, were often viewed through the lens of their sexuality. It was something she’d accepted, something her mother had taught her to use to her advantage but here it was different. She wasn’t looking to take advantage, to gain a one up on her fellow cadets but instead be seen as one of them. Her challenges came in the form of balancing her own desires and not desiring to be seen as an object. As an attractive Orion, it often meant having to deal with fellow cadets that she’d have to make understand what no meant.

Despite her personal challenges, she graduated with high marks across the board. She was as active in the class room as she was in several sports including martial arts, sailing and marksmanship. She was a natural on a boat, her father having taught her a great deal.

She’d not had contact with home in nearly six years when she finally sent a message to her parents. It was a long one, it explained where she’d been and the path she’d chosen. Her father was the only one to attend her graduation from the academy. A welcomed sight after not seeing him for such a long time.

::USS Calypso - California Class::
The Calypso was Dashku’s first tour of duty, it was a much different ship than the cadet cruises she’d been on previously. The crew had more familiarity with each other, they worked well together and it took her a little while to find her place. She managed to make friends with a few of the other lower decks ensigns, and they formed a tight bond. They were often put on the more menial and far less enjoyable tasks but she connected and they saw her as an equal. She didn’t have to act like she was in control, nor play any sorts of games. It reminded her of her time with her former captain.

The two years as an ensign, before finally getting a chance at some real leadership.

::USS Scarab - Akira Class::
The Scarab was her first test of real leadership, she was made the assistant department head. It was a new ship and she’d excelled in her previous rolls. She was happy to finally be aboard a ship that was a little more advanced that the cadet ship or the Calypso. The technical challenge, as well as the growth of her career were more than enough to excite her about joining the new ship.

With the higher title, her voice carried more weight. It also meant better quarters and staff that worked for her instead of her just following orders save for being given different projects. It meant being able to direct some work and keep the ship operating smoothly. The nature of the work, always offering up unique challenges and problems, kept her from getting bored in her work.

The hardest part was forming bonds with her fellow officers, while she could connect and talking about work was easy, diving into personal subjects was far more of a challenge. She’d grown up differently than many of the people she served with but she always managed to find those she could connect with even if that meant only having a small handful of friends.

::USS Moore - Prometheus Class::
The promotion to a full department head was a big accomplishment and the assignment was one she was really looking forward to. A new crew, a newer ship and a new list of challenges.
